Did Time Magazine Get it Right by Choosing President Obama 2012 Person of the Year?

This is the second time Barack Obama has been named Time Person of the Year.

Time Magazine announced Wednesday that President Barack Obama was named 2012 Time Person of the Year. Obama beat out runner up Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head by the Taliban for sticking to her principles for women’s rights. Obama also was Time Person of the Year in 2008. The last person to win the title twice was former President George W. Bush.

According to The Huffington Post, Richard Stengel, managing editor of Time, said it was remarkable that Obama won two terms with more than 50 percent of the popular vote as a Democrat. He reportedly said Obama earned the honor "For finding and forging a new majority, for turning weakness into opportunity and for seeking, amid great adversity, to create a more perfect union.”

Do you think Time Magazine got it right in naming President Barack Obama 2012 Time Person of the Year?

The POTUS, regardless of who he is, has NO impact on gas prices or the stock market. Gas prices are based on supply and demand and the market (of which DJI is only one indicator) is controlled by institutional buyers and company profits. True employment numbers are not lower, Bin Laden has been hunted for many years, Obama was the POTUS at the time he was found. And Obama should be impeached for many reasons including sending American citizens to their death while he was being "eye candy" on TV.

Obama as man of the year? What a joke. WORST PRESIDENT EVER !!!This guy should have never been elected the first time, let alone reelected. This narcissist has usurped congressional authority with his so called dream act. As well as all the following: No Olympics for Chicago - turned out to be a big ego trip instead Making race relations worse - (stupidly comment- professor gates) Fly over photo op in New York - scared New Yorkers Selling out other nations by removing missile defense Letting Pelosi and Reid write bills Lack of transparency Multiple czars with no accountability Lying about details of his healthcare reform bill - YOU LIE!!! Attempt to take over census Undecided about giving military what they need to win Association with acorn Worldwide apology tour (this borders on treason) Willing to bend over to our enemies while giving our allies the shaft
Amy December 20, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Wow. Time magazine is till in print? I thought they were defunct.
Brian Crawford December 20, 2012 at 05:30 PM
Absolutely! Although Malala Yousufzai is deserving of much admiration, if you're not familiar with her story you should be.
Ryan Smith (Editor) December 20, 2012 at 05:36 PM
Brian, I'm actually a bit surprised Malala Yousufzai didn't get the nod this year. Talk about an amazing young person.
GregRodgers December 20, 2012 at 05:46 PM
Yes Mr B...the Potus has not bearing on Gas Prices. I've said that before...I only stated it because dumb dumbs kept saying he does...with that one...I was being sarcastic. As for dividing the nation in half, please John B. He did not divide the nation in half. It was already that way. Look no further than the 2000 election with Bush and Gore. That election was as half as it gets down to a few hanging chads. Rock Star...wow! I recall a certain person by the name of Palin saying the same thing...that is until she got her own reality series. As for racism, hah!....what we should not bring up the truth and act as if its not true. Don't ReNig, The White House is White For A Reason, I want my country back!, and so on....yeah none of that stuff never happened right? Give me a break.....
GregRodgers December 20, 2012 at 05:48 PM
I agree Ryan and Brian...she is an amazing person....
GregRodgers December 20, 2012 at 05:50 PM
What a joke....worst President Ever....was held from 2000 - 2008. I think our list for him would be longer and have more negatives.....
Mr. B December 21, 2012 at 02:55 AM
But she's not a liberal.
m. lynds December 21, 2012 at 03:17 AM
Unemployment skyrocketed after odummy took office. yeah, I know..blame bush. gas was $1.68 a gallon when when he took office. more than double that now. as for increasing the deficit by trillions of dollars.. no one to blame but obama. the guy is fiscally clueless. among other things
R++ One of the Famous Dacula Crew December 21, 2012 at 04:10 AM
You mean people still read TIME? Who'd a thunk it?
Tammy Osier December 21, 2012 at 12:27 PM
Now R, of course you'd make the cover of Time Magazine when you won the nobel peace prize for doing nothing more than make promises and running for office. Kind of ironic, don't cha' think?
Terrie R December 21, 2012 at 01:08 PM
Gas price was not $1.68 before Obama took office! Don't know where you were driving but if you check you will find that gas on January 2, 2008 was $3.05! Actually when Bush was sworn in it was $1.68. Check your facts.
David Brown December 21, 2012 at 01:09 PM
Take heart conservatives. The following of your heroes were also named Time Magazine's Person of the Year: Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon (twice), Henry Kissinger, Ronald Reagan (twice), George H. W, Bush, Newt Gingrich, George W. Bush (twice), and Rudolph Giuliani. I hope you feel better now.:
Tammy Osier December 21, 2012 at 01:49 PM
So, basically, they see political figures as being worthy of their cover? For once, I agree with Brian - give it to someone worthy of admiration because of making personal sacrifices for no other reason than it's the right thing to do. No politician should ever get it. The possibility looms there that their motivation could be political, so in my opinion, knocks the criteria right out of the game from the getgo. It wasn't an honor for the others and shouldn't be considered much of an honor for obama either. Find a magazine that knows how to truly recognize true worth in serving mankind. Politicians are a dime a dozen.
David Brown December 21, 2012 at 02:51 PM
Sister Tammy, Time Magazine has named non-politicians who fit your criteria: Charles Lindbergh, Walter Chrysler, Mahatma Gandhi, Harlan Curtice, Pope John XXIII, Martin Luther King, The Apollo 8 astronauts, Peter Ueberroth, Pope John Paul II, Ted Turner, David Ho, Andrew Grove, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg.
Tammy Osier December 21, 2012 at 02:54 PM
Ted Turner? Rest my case. It's not where they've come from (used to be an excellent magazine). It's where they are going. Most people are simply being observant of that. I've always liked them, but noticed that they have become les objective and more out to appeal to certain bases in recent years. Loses credibility once that happens.
George Wilson December 21, 2012 at 03:50 PM
@m Lynds You forgot to include George Bush: 1. Deletion of the surplus in the budget 2. Two unpaid for wars 3. Attacks on civil liberties 4. Tax cuts for the wealthy 5. Decline in middle class income 6. Appointment of radical conservatives judges to the Supreme Court I believe Obama has been an outstanding President. Perhaps that was why he was reelected.
David Brown December 21, 2012 at 05:00 PM
Tammy, apparently you won't be satisfied until you get the final word in. That explains why I referred to you previously as the arbiter of Patch.:) God bless you, my sister.
Racer X December 21, 2012 at 06:09 PM
There is no denying our Country is more divided than ever, which is the perfect recipe for Big Government to continue snowballing, this as a direct result of Obama's presidency. Obama, "Man of the year"? Not hardly. Show me a man who can unite our country, then you will have someone worthy of "Man of the year".
George Wilson December 21, 2012 at 06:32 PM
@M lynds The United States uses around 20% of the world's oil, but only sits on around 2% of the oil reserves. Even though the U.S. is drilling more today, there is no way it could keep up completely with demand by only drilling inside its borders. Over the last three years since President Obama has taken office, the United States reliance on foreign oil has dropped. In 2010, the U.S. dependence on foreign oil dropped below 50 percent for the first time in over a decade. While the U.S. is producing more of its own oil and relying less on others, gas prices are still high. A possible war with Iran, uncertainty with Israel, the possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz and other issues in the Middle East has caused oil prices to rise. Republicans can blame President Obama all they want, but the facts are the facts. As gas prices increased in 2008, the Fox News Channel was quick to defend President Bush and his inability to do much about the rising cost of gas. We fast forward to 2012, and they seem to forget their former position and take the Republican Party line of bashing President Obama. Who should you blame for rising gas prices? You can point to the Middle East, oil companies or Wall Street, but pointing your finger only at President Obama is just not right
Debra Evans December 21, 2012 at 07:06 PM
No, they didn't get it right. Obama is the worst possible president.
George Wilson December 21, 2012 at 07:12 PM
@Racer X We have a divided political system because of the work of both parties in gerrymandering districts that favors partisanship over compromise. The other reasons are divisions produced by the media. especially talk radio. .Moreover anyone listening to Fox News vs. MSNBC can easily see the difference. This problem was caused by the law passed in the 1980's that took away the "Fairness in Media" doctrine. We just had a bad Supreme Court decision "Citizens United" that allows unlimited spending by corporations on political campaigns. Until these three major political issues are resolved, no one person can unite this country.
Bret O'Connor December 21, 2012 at 07:21 PM
I agree Racer X. We have a gridlocked Congress that can't get anything done because we don't have a president who can get the two parties to reach a consensus. This is now a very divided country made that way by a president who pandered to every liberal group he could find in order to get elected ignoring the people who actually produce jobs.
Lee Hebert December 21, 2012 at 09:38 PM
This comment is for Terrie Reuvers,. Please check your facts as well. President Obama was sworn into office on January 20, 2009. Not 2008. The average national price for a gallon of gas on January 19,2009 was 1.842. When the former President Bush was sworn into office on January 20,2001 the national average for a gallon of gas was 1.469.
Racer X December 21, 2012 at 11:07 PM
George- For once you said something poignant. It is the gerrymandering from both sides. But Obama is at the helm, this is his responsibility. As far as the media goes, the MSM, your boys, are the worst violators. The rest of us are just tired of your brand of horse hockey. Obama is the divider, he had set the boundaries, he is not, by any means, the "Man of the year".
John B December 21, 2012 at 11:52 PM
Yup....George was on a roll with a fair and balanced post before slamming on the brakes and not mentioning that the onus is on the POTUS to provide the leadership to have both parties working in concert. Unfortunately the president has his own biased agenda and is incapable of reaching across the aisle...He has made claims that he's tried but it doesn't work with alligator arms!
Tammy Osier December 22, 2012 at 12:56 AM
Racerx said: Show me a man who can unite our country, then you will have someone worthy of "Man of the year". Amen to that Racer X! But you and Brett both had a point in which you can't blame on congress. Obama is the first president that simply cannot compromise and/or agree with anything that doesn't fit into his dictatorial agenda. A good president knows how to unite both sides. Reagan was the best thus far at that. democrats both loved and hated him, but they completely respected him because he knew how to bargain and give in.
Racer X December 22, 2012 at 03:59 AM
Point well made Tammy. Obama is also the first President who is an actual product OFthe government. Every good thing in his life (save his grandmother on his mother's side) has been provided by the government including every job he ever had. I think if he made all his college records available we would find he went to Occidental as an exchange student on our nickel too. It's too bad Time magazine doesn't have a "Schmuck of the year" award, it would be much more fitting for him.
