Tropical Rainfall in Our Future

Rainfall will bring cooler temperatures.

It looks like a little break in the heat is upon us with the chance for very heavy rainfall over the next several days.

The Hydrometeorlogical Prediction Center (HPC) has forecast 3"+ for our area over the next 4-5 days. Tropical moisture from the Gulf in association with a stalled front will work to create very slow moving thoundershowers that will drop a large amount of rain over a very short period of time.

The main threat will be heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and small hail. You can see all the HPC forecasst maps and discissions here.

As much as I would like to believe that this is really going to happen, I have to say that I am starting to think that I am living under some kind of alien force field - or my shields are up! It rains everywhere but at my house! Sometimes, it even rains on my street, but my driveway, cars and porches remain dry!
Susan July 09, 2012 at 03:29 PM
Well it has been 5 weeks since I put granular fertilizer down and it still hasn't dissolved. No wonder the lakes are going down-no run off.
Kim Roberto July 09, 2012 at 04:23 PM
I agree Linda - you must live by me. I drove down 78 Saturday late afternoon in the pouring rain, turned onto Rosebud to go home, and it was dry as a bone. I hope we get something soon!!!!

If you're short on rain... you're not the only one. I'm almost 6" below normal for the year at DaculaWeather.com. Most of us here in Georgia are still in an extreme drought. http://www.daculaweather.com/4_drought_monitor.php

I ended up getting 1.75" last night. Could've done without the thunder waking me, but grateful for the rain.

No rain at the house. I probably had almost 3" here at Cobbly Nob (yes... it is a real place! http://goo.gl/maps/IFiZ).

Oh, happy day! Rain. We had a wonderful rain last night and I always love a thunderstorm. Here's hoping for a few more days of it. I'd be happy if it rained all week!

We loved hearing the storm last night and welcome more rain!

Check out the 2 pictures I just uploaded. This morning we're watching the fog roll across the Smokies, sitting on the deck with a cup of coffee. Ahhhh... the good life! :-)

First the gorgeous beach, now the beautiful mountains ... I do believe you have a mean streak to be rubbing it in like that ;) Seriously though - great pictures. I am quite envious.

I've got some really great videos to upload when I get back. My internet connection here isn't the speediest. I've been uploading one video since Sunday and it's still only 91% done. I got a great one during the thunderstorm yesterday with lots of lightning, I have Greenbrier Road, two video's crossing the Smokies, one going to Newfound Gap from Cherokee, and another one down the other side. We have one of a bear, a waterfall, Roaring Forks Motor Trail (several times, once in the dark), and more to come.

The photos uploaded are great ! But I'm with Linda on this one. We so desperately need the rain, but so far at my house we've only had a tease. Clouds & thunder were about all I got last night. I hope we get a good soaking out of this system before my neighborhood ponds turn into fields.
Kristi Reed (Editor) July 10, 2012 at 02:02 PM
I can't wait to see them. I guess I should've dragged myself out of bed last night to get that torrential rain and lightning on camera. It was very tropical like there for a while -- just sheets of rain.

Here's the radar estimated precip totals for Gwinnett and the surrounding area. I'm using a new color table with a different scale, it makes it easier to see where the heaviest rain has fallen. Note that some areas in Gwinnett have had more than 6" of rain over the last 3.29 days. http://www.daculaweather.com/images/2012_07/atl_rain.png

Oh the colors ,,,,,,,,,,, Wow
North Georgia Weather July 14, 2012 at 01:39 AM
Yes, I had to fix those colors! I had to take an existing color table and modify it. Hope it looks a little better now!
R++ One of the Famous Dacula Crew July 14, 2012 at 02:26 AM
One or two? I've found three color tables, I mean tablets, REALLY bring out the contrasts
North Georgia Weather July 14, 2012 at 03:15 PM
They'll do that to you! ;-) Good thing the rain has stopped... the Atlanta radar has been down since 4:17 am.
