Joy is a Tangled Toy

Joy can be found in a tangled toy? Yogi + mama Megan Kearney finds happiness in even the most mundane activities.

"Mama, can you untangle this?" asked my 6 year old son as he handed me a wadded up mess of threads bound around a paratrooper. When I looked at him in dismay, wondering if I would be able fulfill this request in an already jammed packed morning, I almost said "It's beyond repair. Let's throw it out." But then, possibly sensing my hesitation, he added "I know you can do it!"

And right there, the lessons we would both learn from this moment, far outweighed just chucking the paratrooper. Slowly and precisely we can began to work on him. The kids bored of the project to save the wounded warrior, but I kept to it with diligence, with focus. And when I finished, I am not quite sure who had more joy in the untangled mess -- no wait, it was definitely me.

Everyday we have these moments given to us, we can choose to stop and live joy in every second or we can rush through. The Buddha said, "When you realize how perfect everything is, you will tilt your head back and laugh at the sky." He was suggesting that by not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, we can find joy in the present. Even in the most MUNDANE activities!

So this week, find your joie de vivre, throw up a handstand [adho mukha vrksasana] or practice camel pose [ustrasana]. When you eat your favorite meal, linger over each bite, savor it slowly. And whether you are by yourself or sitting with friends, take a moment to soak in the joy. Look up and laugh at the sky -- the moment is PERFECT!
