The Year Ago Snow

Here is the video, showing The Cure for Nature Deficit Disorder, showcasing the awesome snow we had, a year ago.. and the Persimmon Seeds have spoken...

Oh the Snow of January 9th 2011. What a wondrous sight it was. Then when we woke up on January 10th, it was even more beautiful! I must admit that I absolutely enjoyed it!  See, I was born in January, in North Dakota, and during a blizzard, no doubt. I lived there long enough to remember the snows reaching our 2 story windows. I loved the snow so much as a kid, because I didn’t have to worry about the issues that come with a huge snow. I still have a certain love for the snow, but Im grown now- and have a husband who has to spend his time, dealing with every issue that bad weather storms bring, along our county roads, no matter what time it is… but I still find it quite magical..

When the snowstorm hit last year, I was so excited and so worried, all at the same time.. See,  I had cracked open some Persimmon seeds earlier in November of 2010- and hopefully everybody knows that Persimmon Seeds are Nature’s great prognosticators. I even filmed a video called Persimmon Seed Folklore which you may have already seen, I hope. I opened 10 seeds total:  7 seeds which contained spoons, one seed had a fork and two seeds had a knife. Spoon= shoveling snow.. Fork= Fair winter weather… and Knife= ice and cold winds that will “cut through you like a knife”.. Why was I so excited? Because we actually got 7 inches of snow! Like the seven seeds that contained a shovel… I even took pictures.

On the flip side, I was extremely worried about so much snow because it can really hurt some of our plants. I was worried mostly about my specimen Edgeworthia. This is one of my favorite plants in my yard because it has such beautiful nodding buds in the winter and come March it will send a heavenly scent through my entire yard! I left the snow around its base, like a blanket and prayed that the snow would not freeze the buds.

I filmed this Edgeworthia plant through the entire year, to show what a beautiful plant it is, and when the snow fell, I knew it would be a perfect way to show exactly how wonderful it really is- especially during bleak winter months. This plant heralds spring like no other- even in the snow.

I don’t know about you, but, I get cabin fever every year, around February, so in order to make myself feel better about it, I have personally coined my condition “Nature Deficit Disorder"  or NDD for short. I knew I  had almost the whole month of January to edit and finish this video, showing the Edgeworthia through the seasons, before coming down with said NDD.  By the time I finished it, I knew what I would call the video! Edgeworthia, The Cure for Nature Deficit Disorder … because it is like a cure!

I have lived in Georgia for most of my life, and Im so glad to be here! I am sure that I still would have been an Horticulturist in North Dakota, but I sure do love the fact that Georgia truly has every single season: our Springs with lots of rain, or maybe none at all.  The Summers, with terrible droughts, or sometimes too much rain,  and then Fall – oh the Fall with our trees putting on such spectacular displays of color. And our Winters, sometimes mild but sometimes with snow and or ice, … and just fyi, the persimmon seeds I opened this year have spoken. They said :  spoons and knives… Oooweee, again? … Yes,  I love Georgia, even when it snows…

So here is the short video of the Edgeworthia, the Cure for Nature Deficit Disorder all while celebrating the snow that happened one year ago today (and yesterday)..
