Today in History--June 12

Four words are said to have helped change the course of history.

Today in 1987, President Ronald Reagan made his now famous request to Mikhail Gorbachev to β€œtear down this wall.”

He was speaking at the 750th anniversary of Berlin, at the historic Brandenburg Gate near the Berlin Wall. Reagan was talking about the Wall, which had been built in 1961 to divide the City of Berlin into Communist East Germany and Democratic West Germany.

On Nov. 8, 1989, East Germany opened the wall. By the end of the year, it was dismantled. The speech is considered an important one in Cold War history. The tearing down of the wall came to symbolize the end of the Soviet Union's style of Communism.
