Today in History

The story of Joan of Arc has been presented in movies, plays and other artistic works.

Today in 1431, Joan of Arc, the teenage peasant girl who became the savior of France, was burned at the stake as a heretic in Rouen, in what was then English-controlled Normandy. Today, she is a national heroine in France and a Roman Catholic Saint.

She was born in eastern France. At 12 or so, she reported hearing voices and having visions. These involved Saint Margaret and Saint Catherine, as well as the Angels Michael and Gabriel.

During the Hundreds Years’ War between France and England, Joan led the French army to several important victories and rallied the French people to resistance. This led to the coronation of Charles VII.

She was captured in Burgundy, which was controlled by the English, and the pro-English forces there handed her over to the English for money. She was tried by the pro-English Bishop of Beauvais and then burned at the stake as a heretic.

She was proclaimed a martyr in 1456 and was canonized in 1920. Her feast day is May 30.
