Neil Armstrong - Dead at 82

NBC News reports that Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, has died.

According to NBC News, Neil Armstrong died Saturday after having heart surgery a few weeks ago. He just recently celebrated his 82nd birthday.

Armstrong is most famous for commanding the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, giving him the opportunity to become the first man to walk on the surface of the moon. He coined those famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

What are your memories of that famous moon landing and the achievements of Armstrong?

This is another of those "I remember where I was moments." We had no TV (South Africa was a little behind), but I listened to it on the radio, on the floor in my living room. Strange how memories are prompted by incidents like this. I so clearly remember sitting on the floor next to the radio listen through the static and hearing those words. I'll never forget, our maid, Iris, who was like my second mother, sat on the floor with me and listened to it as well. She had been trying to teach me how to bake a cake and it had flopped so badly that it had a hole in the middle. She picked it up and held it up to the window and said, "If you look through the hole in the middle, you'll be able to see that man walking on the moon. RIP Neil Armstrong - and RIP Iris!

What a great memory Sharon! I too remember the date and time we heard about this moment. I was sitting on the floor of our TV room watching it on TV and hearing my Mom explain what a HUGE event this was.
