Loganville Mayor Issues Challenge to Fellow Mayors in Walton and Gwinnett

One of the first actions of newly sworn-in Mayor Dan Curry was to sign a proclamation pledging Loganville’s support of The Contract to Cure Cancer. He also pledged his own personal support for the contract and then threw out a challenge to other mayors in the area.

“I’ve talked this over with my wife and we will buy 200 stamps,” Curry said, going on to challenge all mayors in Walton and Gwinnett to do the same.

Loganville real estate mogul Mark Meyers, who initiated the Contract to Cure Cancer, said he was purchasing 1,000 stamps to help reenergize the drive.

The Contract to Cure Cancer was first initiated by Myers in 2002 with the support of Councilman Mike Jones, who at that time was mayor of Loganville. After a cancer scare in his own family, Myers had solicited the help of Jones to raise awareness of the funds raised to fight cancer through the sale of the breast cancer awareness stamp. Through Loganville’s Contract to Cure Cancer, the city became the No. 1 city per capita in the nation in the purchase of breast cancer awareness stamps. According to reports at the time, the sale of breast cancer awareness stamps from the Loganville Post Office in 2003 went up 1,000 percent. Officials hope this new effort will not just match those results, but better them.

Myers is asking civic organizations, business, churches and schools to get involved. He is asking that each person who takes one sheet of the Contract also make 10 copies to distribute. According to the Contract to Cure Cancer website, more than $88 million has been raised so far through the sale of 965 million stamps. The push is to raise that to more than 1 billion stamps sold.
