Looking Ahead to Spring, Summer - What Camps Do You Know of?

The Hudgens Center for the Arts in Duluth is looking forward to spring and summer and letting Gwinnett residents know what’s being offered.

Spring art classes start the week of March 18 and include one and two-day workshops as well as regular eight-week long classes in a variety of media.

Registration is also open for summer children’s art camps, which include four Color Wheel sessions and three Summer Pottery sessions. 

Two free Altered Books workshops are scheduled for Saturday, March 9.

Spring art classes

Classes to be taught this spring include pottery, plein air and landscape painting in pastels, acrylics or oils; figure drawing and creative drawing for adults and for children; and more. Two pottery classes will be taught in Korean.

Art classes are available for both day and evening times, and typically meet one day a week for eight weeks, although some meet only five weeks, such as the parent and child pottery class. There is also a daytime pottery class for homeschooled kids.

Subjects for the one- and two-day workshops include precious metal clay jewelry, sgraffito (carving on clay), soap-making and handmade hand lotions and toiletries.

Summer Camp registration open

The Hudgens is offering four different sessions summer art camps for children ages 5-12 in June and three sessions of summer pottery camp for children ages 8-14 in July. 

The Color Wheel summer art camps will meet from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Campers will rotate through three classes each day in drawing & painting, clay, and mixed media. Sessions will conclude with a mini exhibit of works created by camp participants.

Color Wheel Session I is June 3-7, Session II June 10-14, Session III June 17-21, and Session IV June 24-28. Cost is $200 or $175 for family level members. Signing up early is recommended since sessions are limited to 45 students.

Summer Pottery Camp is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Students will learn pottery wheel techniques and create their own functional and sculptural forms from clay. They will also spend time handbuilding and learning how to finish and glaze their pieces.

Pottery Camp Session I is July 8-12, Session II is July 15-19, and Session III is July 22-26. Cost is $275 per session or $250 for family level members. Pottery camps are limited to 14 students each session.

The Hudgens is located at 6400 Sugarloaf Parkway, Building 300, in the Gwinnett Center complex.

Free Altered Book workshops

The Gwinnett County Public Library is again partnering with The Hudgens to provide two free Altered Book workshops Saturday, March 9. Led by Kassie Arcate, the workshops will give participants hands-on experience with the techniques used to create altered books. The workshops are being offered in conjunction with the library system’s annual Altered Book Competition.

A youth workshop (for children in grades 6-12) occurs from 10 a.m. to noon, and an adult workshop (for ages 18 and over) from 1-3 p.m.

These workshops are free, but pre-registration is required, and attendance is limited. Register in advance by emailing info@thehudgens.org. Specify the youth or adult workshop and give children’s ages.
