Bobby Boss Drive in Loganville Named for Retired Commander of Loganville American Legion

After 36 years, Long-time Commander Bobby Boss stepped down from his post at the helm of the Barrett-Davis-Watson American Legion Post 233 in Loganville on Aug. 7, 2012. On Dec. 13, 2012, the City of Loganville recognized his service to the city by renaming Mill Street Bobby Boss Drive in honor of his commitment and service to the city.

Loganville City Councilman Skip Balilies made the announcement to Boss and his wife, Evelyn, at Thursday's City Council meeting, surprising him with the road sign.

Boss had been the commander of Post 233 for almost 37 years when he retired. Post 233 is one of the largest, and most successful, American Legion posts in the southeast. Under the leadership of Boss, a Navy veteran, the post has been a force for good in the Loganville community. From its support of the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts, providing scholarships for nurses, supporting the little league baseball players at West Walton Ballfields or working with veterans, the American Legion Post in Loganville flourished under the leadership of Boss. It was for this commitment to the Loganville community that city officials honored Boss with a street bearing his name.

For his part, Boss gave credit back to the people, like the current city council members, who serve the city. But in making the award, Baliles said it it only once in a while that such a great person comes along. Boss has been known over the years for his service to the community - personally as well as through the American Legion.

"I learned that it was Bobby Boss at the American Legion that gave the City of Loganville it's first trash truck," Baliles said.

Boss, now 81, had been re-elected every year since he took over as commander of the Barrett-Davis-Watson American Legion Post more than 36 years ago. Boss was replaced by Jim Carmona on Aug. 7, 2012, after he stepped down from his post. Boss was honored for his service at the annual Anniversary dinner of the American Legion last month.
