A Memorial Day in Loganville

Photographer David Binder shares some of the sights of Memorial Day in Loganville as he was out and about meeting interesting people and paying tribute to those who have served the country and then returned to the local community.

I knew it was going to be a special day. I just didn't realize how special. Leaving my house off McCullers Rd, as I approached Ga Hwy 20, I saw a man in combat fatigues marching up the road carrying an American flag. As each approaching vehicle went by he stopped and saluted them. What an awesome sight. I just had to stop and talk to him. His name was (Ret) Gunnery Sgt John "Marty" Harrell. As he approached he told me "I march for my friend Franklin Ivan Burris."

They were best friends serving in Vietnam. Burris died from injuries he sustained in Da Nang while no Medic chopper was available to fly him out. What a tribute !

Driving up and down Hwy 78, the city was adorned in flags - up and down the street, in front of businesses, in front of homes.

In the city cemetary, I found the resting place of First Lt David Benjiman Tuck who died in service to our Country during the WWII invasion of France.

Our soldiers should be celebrated every day, but it's good to know that they do have one day a year set aside for remembrance. Thank you for your sacrifice and for my freedom !
