I will admit I am no "Grammar Queen." You would have a field day correcting my work IRead More do a lot of my writing in the middle of the night and rely heavily on spell check but it doesn't always know what I am really trying to say. Sometimes my computer has a mind if its own and adds what it thinks I am saying. I don't always catch my mistakes so I will apologize now in case you read any of my writing. Sorry! Good article.

Excellent post --most of your pet peeves described here annoy me too. I wish more people would dropRead More the apostrophe and learn about there, their and they're (as well as the difference between its and it's). Brava!

Such a great slice of life, Lori! I can definitely relate to the music/kid thing. Wish I couldRead More relate to the games, but I'm pathetically stuck back in the Monopoly and Stratego board game days!
Lori Duff July 10, 2014 at 03:22 pm
Thanks, Irene and Colleen! Don't make any mistake -- I can play a mean game ofRead More Scrabble................. :-)

Label this tip: Barn door - Lock = gone horse, but if you put a wet phone in with a bag of riceRead More overnight in the furnace room (or any room - it's the rice, not the room) it will really dry the sucker out. Note: minute-rice will not dry it any faster, but long grain might work better.

I keep a ziplock bag of rice in my first aid kits at all times ( one at home & one in my car! )

Lori, It's wonderful how mothers have nearly total recall. I was a mom at 21 and showed myRead More daughters how to dance to American Bandstand. My husband and I wrote a book "All About The Beatles" and got to meet them during their first trip to New York. When we moved from New York to California we stayed at the Chateau Marmont Hotel in Hollywood for a few weeks while looking for a house to rent. The Rolling Stones were in the penthouse there and Bob Dylan was staying there at the same time. Mark Twain has been and always will be an inspiration to us all. Thank you for a wonderful post.

Actually the biggest tip off you made about you age is that you not only know of, but still buyRead More VHS.... And don't forget the famous Aristotle quote, that old stick in the mud: “Our youth now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for their elders and love chatter in place of exercise; they no longer rise when elders enter the room; they contradict their parents, chatter before company; gobble up their food and tyrannize their teachers.”
Lori Duff June 12, 2014 at 10:38 am
Thanks, guys! Irene -- is that book still in print? What an interesting experience all that mustRead More have been. Brian -- if only I had known about that quote before I wrote the article.....

Lori, while I understand how annoying it must be to have hair that defies gravity, on a positiveRead More note, word has it that you're a leading candidate for the Nobel Prize for Physics (lol).

Lori, maybe you can find a good seamstress who could alter a pattern (because they're probably forRead More booty shorts, too), to get her through the summer. Then you could appear on Shark Tank with a sample and pitch the idea to Lori Greiner, the QVC celeb ;) Find some capris she likes, cut and hem. It's a real dilemma. No 10 year old should have to - or be allowed to - wear ho clothes.
Lori Duff June 2, 2014 at 02:56 pm
I'm sure I could. In all my spare time. :-)
Good Grief Y'all June 2, 2014 at 04:19 pm
Ha! BTW - have you noticed comments from several posters like "Wendy" above? Looks likeRead More Patch has been hacked. I have not seen this on other blogs, though.

Thank you for sharing all of your justifications for NOT cleaning, Lori! I'm printing this off andRead More the next time I don't wanna, I'm going to hand it off to the critic and just say, "What she said."

I'll back you up!

The only thing that even comes close to the importance of coffee in our society is chocolate. I hopeRead More your tummy heals soon!
Jaimie Cura March 27, 2014 at 11:26 am
Don't I know it! I had that awful stomach bug that's been going around and it was eight days beforeRead More I felt good enough to have coffee! How are you feeling now? Better, I hope!
Lori Duff March 27, 2014 at 03:31 pm
I'm fine now, thanks, all. I post these about two weeks after the fact, so I'm rarely timely. AndRead More I apologize about missing the fact that Hawaii is in fact American soil -- I should have said "continental American soil." Still, the point is the same, the point being that I love coffee with a passion bordering on the clinical.

It's a male dominated thermostat here. My husband loves the house good and cold at around 66 in theRead More winter, but thinks 78-80 is ideal in summer. Hmmm...
kj February 8, 2014 at 05:00 pm
From a blog on Boston.com: Turn down the thermostat to lose weight - Health - Boston.com RecentRead More research found that if we stay out of the "Goldilocks Zone" and keep the house colder in winter we activate beige fat which burns up to 30% more calories. http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/health/blogs/daily-dose/2014/01/29/turn-down-the-thermostat-lose-weight/MIlg7thWXLvwzqx1vb6ixI/blog.html "A recent study from Japan found that volunteers who spent two hours a day in 63 degree temperatures for six weeks experienced a significant decrease in body fat. A group of Danish researchers reported that people who spend six hours a day at cooler temperatures wind up adjusting after 10 days—shivering less and feeling more comfortable in the cold. " “Your body needs to burn calories to dissipate warmth to cool you down or to generate heat when you’re cold,” she explained. It’s when you’re in a Goldilocks climate—not too hot, not too cold—that your body requires the fewest calories to maintain your body temperature.
Lori Duff February 9, 2014 at 09:35 am
Interesting. I suppose I'll use that as my excuse for excess body fat from now on. :-)

I remember going to many concerts when my dgt. played the clarinet in middle school. It took herRead More hours of determination, but she was finally able to get the sound to come out right. Then she blossomed! She became first chair of the concert band and loved it. However, in HS the students were required to be in marching band if they wanted to be in concert band. She did not want to be part of the marching band, so she quit. We fought the issue, but it was mandatory. It is a real shame, since she never picked up the clarinet again........

Andrew first got a trumpet in 7th grade and played it from when he got off the bus all the wayRead More walking down the street to the house....I have never heard such horrible noise...but he did improve! Thank goodness. And - BTW, Marin probably IS the cutest one on the stage!

Lori, this article would make an excellent public service announcement. I went to a dance recitalRead More the other night where people were laughing and guffawing at their own kids! Feelings count, especially in the very young.
