These flowers may not be good for mom's waistline, but they are pretty and fun to make.
I have two major cooking goals: 1.) Learn to make the perfect frosting for decorating cakes and cupcakes 2.) Learn to make perfect icing roses. So far, I have accomplished neither. That has not stopped me from trying to make pretty cakes and cupcakes though. As with most of my recent baking attempts, this week's project was inspired by a photo on Pinterest. Honestly, it turned out to be far easier than I thought it would be. I have a peacock cupcake on my to-try list that looks as if it will be far more difficult, but that is a project for another week. Now, in the way of disclosure, I don't usually do cupcakes or cakes from scratch and I didn't make them from scratch for this project. In fact, I didn't even make the cupcakes -- my …

The Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaboration leaves critics unimpressed.
For those who remember the gothic soap opera “Dark Shadows,” word of the movie version starring Johnny Depp was likely welcome. Unfortunately for fans of the television series, the transition to the big screen has been judged and found wanting. In "Dark Shadows," vampire Barnabas Collins, played by Depp, awakens from a centuries-long sleep in 1972 to find his estate and empire in near ruins. Collins predictably sets out to restore the family fortune and finds himself at odds with the witch who transformed him into a vampire in the mid-1700s. Scott Weinberg of FearNet.com described the movie as a “true stinker, in Hollywood terms.” “ ‘Dark Shadows’ suffers from a miserable pace, a confused editorial approach, and a tone that wavers between …

Lots of fun and lots of sun for those attending Snellville Days on opening day.
The opening day of the 39th annual Snellville Days parade and festival brought a steady stream of people to both downtown and Briscoe Park. Patch was there to capture some of the actions in photo and video on May 5, 2012. This year's theme is "Proud to Be..." To see video of the parade, click here. The fun continues on Sunday, May 6, as the festival moves into its second day. Be sure to catch the dozens of vendors, including businesses, arts and crafts and local nonprofits today, in addition to the special kiddie field and entertainment stages. Event organizers estimate that upwards of 25,000 to 30,000 people attend the two-day event. The festival goes on today noon to 5 p.m. at Briscoe Park, off Lenora Church Road.

If loving this is wrong, I don't want to be right. I have a sweet tooth -- maybe two or three of them. The other day, I got a craving and ended up trying a dessert recipe I found on Pinterest. (Note to self: Quit looking at recipes on Pinterest.) Anyway, this 7-layer cookie recipe is extremely easy to make and incredibly delicious. I wouldn't really call it a cookie recipe, it is more of a candy -- a sweet, gooey, chocolately, heavenly candy. Ingredients: Directions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine graham crackers and butter, press into the bottom of a greased 13x9 casserole dish. Spread chocolate chips on graham cracker mixture. Then layer butterscotch chips, coconut and chopped nuts (I used pecan halves instead of chopped). Pour …

An aggregated group of reviews of another Marvel-inspired movie.
A quick survey of Internet movie reviews shows that The Avengers, to be released this week, is a must see for those who grew up obsessed with Marvel comic-books. The all-star cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Tim Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Mark Ruffalo and Jeremy Renner. "The Avengers makes superhero movies new again — a colossal task indeed," says Joe Neumaier of the New York Daily News, who gives the movie five stars. "Folks, these flicks don’t get any better than this." "The Avengers is a damn fun, entertaining and satisfying superhero spectacle," writes Eric Goldman for IGN Movies. Critic Christy Lemire, writing in the Miami Herald, says co-writer and director Joss Wheldon "has pulled off the tricky feat of juggling a…

With events in April like Taste of Grayson and Grayson Day, local residents have had plenty of opportunity to see what restaurants and businesses have to offer in the local area.

Monday, April 30
With first a Taste of Grayson and then a week later Grayson Day, there is no shortage of opportunities for businesses to showcase their wares in the local area. On April 21, a Taste of Grayson gave local restaurants the chance to have locals get a taste of the local cuisine while helping a good cause. The money raised will go toward supporting Grayson High School student activities as well as "Relay for Life." A portion of ticket sales goes toward the cancer charity. Some local businesses outside of the restaurant trade also showcased their businesses at the event. A week later, businesses got to do it all over again. With a parade and more than 170 vendors attending, Grayson Day again gave local businesses an opportunity to let the public…
