Woodall Votes To Help Defund Abortions

H.R. 3 passed in the House May 4 with a vote of 251-175, mainly along party lines.

The House approved another bill Wednesday that would help restrict federal funding for abortions passing 251-to-175, mainly along party lines with just 16 Democrats joining with Republicans to help pass the measure. U.S. Rep. Rob Woodall (R-Georgia) was one of the 251 votes.

H.R. 3, titled “No Taxpayer Funding For Abortion Act,” establishes a government-wide prohibition on funding abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when a woman’s life is in danger.

“For over 30 years, a variety of policies have regulated federal funding of abortions, but thanks to this bipartisan comprehensive bill, American taxpayer dollars will no longer fund the abortion industry,” Woodall released in a statement following the vote. “I am committed to defending the defenseless and protecting the lives of precious, unborn children.”

Woodall went on to say that during this economic crisis when the federal government is borrowing 42 cents of every dollar it spends, surely as a nation it could be agreed that abortions are not a national priority requiring borrowing.

“Although our fight against abortion is by no means over, H.R. 3 is a huge step in the right direction, ensuring that no American is forced to fund the abortion industry,” Woodall said.

The bill eliminates tax breaks for insurance providers that cover abortion services and restricts taxpayer funding for abortions in all federal programs. Whether the bill will ever become law, however, is uncertain. It would still have to come up for a vote in the Senate and it’s been reported that the president has said he would veto it.
