Wingo and Michaels were named in the 49-count federal indictment in the investigation of Monroe-based Angel Food Ministries and an AJC article dated Dec 13 states they have pleaded not guilty to these charges. Joe and Linda Wingo are also named in the indictment and are scheduled to appear in a Macon court today.
The four are under an indictment that also includes allegations of kickbacks and money laundering to support a lavish lifestyle that included numerous homes and private jets.
Angel Food Ministries was founded in 1997 and bought food in bul which was then sold at discounted prices to families through a network of church ministries. Not confined to just the Monroe area, it is said to have sold about 600,000 boxes of food a month in 45 states. The ministry closed in September, citing rising food, fuel and operational costs as the reason.
