Chick-fil-A Reportedly to Stop Funding Anti-Gay Groups

An LGBT advocacy group in Chicago says the restaurant will cease donations to organizations that oppose gay marriage.

A lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy organization in Chicago says Chick-fil-A will cease donations to groups that oppose gay marriage.

In a Sept. 18 press release, The Civil Rights Agenda wrote that Alderman Moreno, the man who led the opposition in Chick-fil-A opening a restaurant in Chicago, "has confirmed that Chick-fil-A will no longer give money to anti-gay organizations and that they have clarified in an internal document that the company will treat every person equally, regardless of sexual orientation."

The release added that Chick-fil-A has sent an internal memo to franchises and stakeholders that states that as a company, they will “treat every person with honor, dignity and respect-regardless of their beliefs, race, creed, sexual orientation and gender."

In July, news broke about Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy speaking publicly against gay marriage. Reactions have been strong on opposite sides of the spectrum, causing Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day, where supporters of Chick-fil-A apparently bought so much food that many chains ran out of chicken, and Same Sex Kiss Day, which involved opposers to stand outside of the restaurants and show public displays of affection with the same sex.

Since Same Sex Kiss Day, things have died down a bit concerning Chick-fil-A, until TRCA's statement.

"We are very pleased with this outcome and thank Alderman Moreno for his work on this issue,” Anthony Martinez, executive director of TCRA, said in the statement.

“I think the most substantive part of this outcome is that Chick-fil-A has ceased donating to organizations that promote discrimination, specifically against LGBT civil rights," he continued. "It has taken months of discussion, both with our organization and with the Alderman, for Chick-fil-A to come forward with these concessions and we feel this is a strong step forward for Chick-fil-A and the LGBT community, although it is only a step.”

If companies are people and people vote with dollars then the destination of the restaurant’s donations are open for public debate. It very well should be an issue as to where peoples’ hard-earned money goes after the chicken goes down their gullet. This issue has made our little feathered friend the modern martyr as Chick-fil-A laughs all the way to the bank. Watch the poultry be nailed to the cross and pierced by the spear of destiny at the hands of those devious cows on my artist’s blog at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2012/08/holy-rollin-poultry-on-cross-chick-fil.html
