Snellville Death of Covington Man First Homicide of the Year in Gwinnett

Murder charges may not be filed in this case, which occurred in the early morning hours of Jan. 5.

According to Snellville's Chief Roy Whitehead, an altercation between a young woman and her boyfriend culminated in the death of her father, as reported by the Gwinnett Daily Post.

The couple were initially involved in a domestic dispute near Briscoe Park, off Lenora Church Road. The woman left, but came back around 3 a.m. with her mother, father and a friend, according to the Gwinnett Daily Post.

The woman's father, 48-year-old Darrell Johnson, got involved, allegedly hitting Derrick Brown, 21, with a club, the paper reports from police sources.

Johnson, of Covington, and his daughter then left the scene to retrieve some clothing. When they came downstairs, Johnson began to beat Brown with a metal barbell, at which point Brown drew a handgun from his pocket, according to police information cited by the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Brown is accused of shooting Johnson twice. After collapsing in the driveway, Johnson reportedly succumbed to his wounds.

This initially appeared on Snellville Patch.

My sincere condolences and prayers go out to the victims' family. However, it was CRAZY to take the law in their own hands. They should have called the Police and them escort them to the property to retrieve the daughter's personal belongings. My question to her would be, "was all of this really worth it?" My parents always taught us NOT to ever get family members involved in ANYTHING that could cause them harm or death. Respectfully Submitted,
