Shock Challenge for Walton BOC Chairman's Seat Opens Up District 5
In a surprise move before the end of qualifying on Friday, Walton County Commissioner Gerald Atha resigned to challenge current Walton County Commission Chair Kevin Little. The move leaves the District 5 seat open.
In a shocker, fellow Commission member Gerald Atha qualified to challenge Walton County Commission Chair Kevin Little on Friday, setting off what promises to be an interesting election season. Atha had to resign his District 5 seat on the Commission to mount the challenge and it is unclear at this time how the county will move forward to fill the seat. It was not up for reelection this cycle.
Other contested races on the Board of Commissioners include:
County Commissioner, District 2
- Chuck Bagley (R)
- Terry L Mitchell (R)
- Mark C Banks (R)
County Commissioner, District 3

The only uncontested seat currently up for reelection on the Board of Commissioners is Commission District 6 with Kirklyn Dixon, the only Democrat in the mix, qualifying unopposed.
The following races also are contested on July 31.
Judge of Probate Court
- Bruce E Wright (R)
- Lori B Duff (R)
- Sheryl Fambrough (R)

In District 7, David Breedlove qualified unopposed as did Coleman Landers in District 4.
Sheriff Joe Chapman also qualified unopposed for his reelection bid as did Clerk of Superior Court Kathy K. Trost, Gerald T. Batchelor for Surveyor and Chief Magistrate Mike Burke.
All the contested races should effectively be decided by July 31, or in a runoff if necessary, as nobody faces a partisan opponent in November.
