Revised Plans for Loganville Town Green Revealed
If approved at next week's City Council meeting, it is possible work can begin immediately and the town green be ready for the 2012 Christmas Tree Lighting on Nov. 23.
The City of Loganville released an alternative rendering of what they hope will become the city's first town green. In the updated version, the pavilion and stage would face City Hall as opposed to the original rending, which had it facing toward Covington Street.
City Manager Bill Jones said if council members approve the new plans at next week's City Council meeting, it is likely work can begin immediately.
"I hope that will be the case," Jones said. "My ambitious goal is to get it approved next week and if they do, we can then go ahead and get started."
Jones said if that is the case, he is hopeful it will be ready in time for the 2012 Loganville Christmas Tree Lighting on Nov. 23. Jones said the new design also is expected to save the city about $70,000 in wall construction costs and fill dirt that would have been required under the original design.
The town green is a project that came out of the Livable Center Initiative that Mayor Ray Nunley commissioned in 2009/2010 when he first took office. This year, the first of those plans came to fruition when the city first purchased and then demolishing both the old AT&T Building and the vacant Catfish College restaurant building. This cleared the way for the city to move ahead and build a town green on the corner of Pecan and Main streets. Nunley said he believes the town green will give the city the focal point it has always needed. He said the plan was to take a leaf out of Monroe's book and have Friday night concerts and other community events take place at the town green in the future.
Jones said much of the work will be undertaken by Loganville city employees. Some of the funded would come from Special Local Option Sales Tax.
