Walton County BOC to Appoint Replacement District 5 Commissioner
The Walton County Board of Commissioners will vote next month on an appointee to fill the unexpired term of District 5 Commissioner Gerald Atha who resigned his post to challenge the chairman for his seat.
A spokesman with the Walton County Elections office said the Board of Commissions will appoint a replacement to fill out the remainder of the term for District 5 Commissioner Gerald Atha. In a shocker on the last day of qualifying, Atha resigned his position on the BOC and qualified to challenge BOC Chairman Kevin Little for his seat.
Little confirmed that the BOC will probably call a special meeting next month to vote on an appointee. He said no special election will be held. The appointee will serve out the remainder of Atha's term, which only runs out at the end of 2013.
Other contested races on the Walton County BOC include:
County Commissioner, District 2
- Chuck Bagley (R)
- Terry L Mitchell (R)
- Mark C Banks (R)
County Commissioner, District 3
- Vickie Morgan Gasaway (R)
- Timmy Shelnutt (R)
The only uncontested seat currently up for reelection on the Walton County BOC is Commission District 6 which is currently held by Kirklyn Dixon, the only Democrat in the mix. The Primary election will be held on July 31. The winner will be decided then as there are no partisan challenges.
