National Unemployment Rate Lowest In Over 2.5 Years

The U.S. rate of unemployment dropped four-tenths of a percentage point to 8.6 percent in November, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

After a six-month period of teetering in the 9.0-9.2 percent range, the national unemployment rate dropped four-tenths of a percentage point to 8.6 percent in November, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today.

The rate is the lowest since March 2009 when the rate was 8.5 percent.

Jobs were added in the fields of retail trade, leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and health care, while jobs in government were lost, according to a news release.

The number of unemployed persons, at 13.3 million, was down by 594,000 in November.

The National Conference of State Legislatures charts unemployment rates by month on the organization's website.

Georgia's unemployment rate has been higher than the national rate. November unemployment rates by county will be reported later this month by the Georgia Department of Labor.
