UPDATE: Loganville Mother Shoots Burglar Several Times
A burglar was shot by a Loganville homeowner Friday morning. She was hiding in an attic space and shot him when he located her.
LOGANVILLE, GA — UPDATE: According to Walton County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Keith Brooks, the young mother shot the burglar after he broke into her Loganville home Friday morning. Brooks said deputies were called in on a report of a burglary in progress. The home was in the Henderson Ridge subdivision off south Sharon Church Road.
"She was aware he was trying to break into the home and took the children and hid in an attic space with them, but he found her," Brooks said, adding that was when she shot him." She then ran to a neighbor with the children and he left in a car.
Brooks said the burglar subsequently wrecked the car in the woods, which is where the deputies found him.
"He was conscious and alert when we got to him," Brooks said, adding they are withholding the name of the burglar for the moment. The Walton Tribune reported that it was a 32-year-old Loganville man and that he was in a critical condition after being shot five times. WSBTV is reporting his name is Paul Slater, of Atlanta, and that he has a record. He also has been listed as a Snellville resident in previous mug shots.

Even a well trained shooter looses anywhere between 30 to 70% accuracy in a genuine combat situation. The fact that she hit him five times is an achievement. I'd like to see you in that situation and the condition of your pants when you're done.

This is why guns should be taken away from Americans. This gentleman probably was simply seeking shelter from a person who was obviouslty richer than he was, and decided to assist the politicians in redistribution of her wealth.

I commend this mother for protecting her children. Only thing I would have done different is send the children to the attic and wait for him to enter the home and shot him as soon as her entered the home, not in view of the children. But then, we all react differently in a time such as this.

It's the adrenaline. Normally, people who are shooting at someone to protect themselves, they empty the entire gun. It's a reaction caused by fear, the victim will keep pulling the trigger even if the gun is empty. In any case, she did a wonderful job protecting herself and her children.

Tell her congratulations. I enjoy hearing these kinds of stories. I hate they have to happen - I don't think anybody should have to go through this. But, I like it much better when the victim isn't hurt. But, I like it MUCH better when the perp is dead at the scene. Just sayin....
And yes, not easy on children, either. Hopefully they'll recover from this experience and learn what happens when you enter somebody else's property with the intention of doing harm.
And yeah, wow, 4 in the chest and one in the face. All I saw was "several times" and assumed, you know, arms, legs, whatever. Surprised anybody lives after taking 4 in the chest then one in the bean. In that case, you're right - she IS a hell of a shot.

any woman should be able to handle a 9mm or .40 cal. Personally, I prefer the .45ACP with 200 gr. XTP hollow points which I load myself. The .40 cal. is nearly as powerful and is used by the FBI and many other LE agencies....typically it's magazine holds 10 rounds. Based on the research I've done and read concerning Wound Ballistics, the .45ACP has a 97% first shot disable or kill ratio with a properly placed shot to center mass........I conceal carry one or the other......

"Any woman?" What if she or he has arthritis in her hands, or is a feeble 80 year old? In a wheelchair - can only handle a .380? Do you carry your .45 when in your jogging shorts?

Tim, You may be right but all she had was a 38 wheel gun. I carry a 45 acp and some days a 9mm. It really does not matter. Shot placement trumps all. If you carry a 45 and are giving numbers you should know that a second round will be very difficult to get your firearm back on target. The 9mm is the best way for the general population to go.

Funny how stories like this bring out all of the "armchair quarterbacks". I hate that this has happened anywhere, much less so close to my home. I'm sure an investigation will reveal whether this was targeted or truly random. I'm proud of this woman for standing up for herself & her children. She is to be greatly admired. Funny how so many people say "I would have..." or "she should have..." Question is could YOU have ? I mean REALLY ? I do carry a handgun & know how to use it. But I'm not sure my wife would have been able to pull that trigger. And Tim, for the record, you're wrong. NOT every woman can handle a 9mm or .40 cal. My wife would do good to be able to shoot (properly) anything bigger than a .22 cal. As much as shot placement plays an important role I'm afraid a .22 would be pretty ineffective against a male of any size hopped up on meth.

I don't know. I've seen how a low caliber can do a LOT more internal damage than a through-and-through you'd get with a higher caliber. Immediately stopping power is not near the same unless you hit them in the head (dropped many 1000# steers where they stood with a .22 to the head) but a .22 ricocheting around in your gut can do a lot more organ damage than a higher caliber that goes straight and can miss organs on its way by.

David, properly trained physically and mentally, a woman could well handle either of those weapons. It is a matter of training and shooting at a range until she is throughly familiar with the operation of the pistol and facing and overcoming any fear she may have towards them. Otherwise, how would one protect themselves? I hope this incident motivates many women that read this to purchase a weapon and become trained how to use it properly.

No Tim, she might not. My wife cannot grip the slide on a 9mm hard enough to chamber a round. Some gals hands will not hold a big frame automatic and be able to control the recoil well enough to hold onto the gun. In cases like these I recommend a shotgun. 12 gauge, short barrel, long tube.
Dr Mayfield

You don't want to make it harder than you have to for someone to be effective in a very high stress situation. In my experience your state of mind and physical functioning alters quite a bit when bullets are passing by. My wife can without fail pull back the slide on a Walther PK380, but the sweaty hand she's have when someone finally busts through the door of her bedroom will certainly slip if the gun were my PPK/S, 'cause it does on the range. (Even my 9mm Glock is an easier pull.)

For all you that say this lady needs practice, know not what you speak. The problem is that it is a 38 cal. Had it been a 45 or 357 he would have not been able to move much less drive. She did just what she should have and that is unload the revolver. Don't stop shooting until it clicks and then reload if you must. This guy was shot in the head multiple times and in the neck. He was shot in the stomach and the liver, if he isn't dead, he was in horrible pain and I'm glad for that. The woman did everything right and unloaded the revolver. My question for the ones saying she is a bad shot, could you have even pulled the trigger if in the same situation? I was a Military Policeman in Vietnam and I saw grown men big enough to play on any NFL team freeze in fear under certain situations and they were highly trained! I'm proud of this lady and she should be rewarded with a medal.

She has, by her actions, ensured her and her children’s' lives and safety past that encounter. That is as close to a perfect outcome as can be hoped for in that situation.
I encourage anyone reading this to become informed about the use of firearms in self-defense, whether they choose to accept the responsibility or not. Books by Col Jeff Cooper, Massad Ayoob, Don Mann and other experts in the field are good places to start. Law enforcement is not and can never be personal bodyguards for each of us. They are a first line of defense. The last line will always be the individual.

The mother of the scooter in CT was totally irresponsible. She knew he needed to be commited and yet he had access to an AR-15? If she was alive I would demand that SHE be prosecuted as an accessory to murder!
Guns are tools. Anybody thing you can't murder someone with a hammer? Another deadly weapon? A barrel pen. How about knitting needles? GET A GRIP. The tool is a tool, not an evil thing. If George Washington had handed over his rifle we would all have British accents. If Eisenhower had, we'd speak German. Any questions?

As to the round choice. I have always loaded Hydra-shok rounds in all my handguns. The kick a little harder, but in the heat of a gunfight you wont notice!
I also practice with both FMJ and JHP, just to see how my pistol reacts to feeding both types of ammo.

I agree, Jim. I do the same with my .45, and I have had the JHP jam one time. I would like to load JHP but can't take the risk that the one time I can't afford a jam is the next time it happens. The 8 round mag also concerns me. I have a 15 round 9mm, but like the power of the .45. Carroll Sturgis, on the border in Texas.

To Bob M. A gun is also a tool. Just as with a gun, a crowbar is a weapon if you want it to be, just not as efficient as a gun. Anything is a weapon if you want it to be. Intent of the person holding the item determins it's status as either tool or weapon.

She is a hero. This perp is a scumbag that got what he deserved. That said, all the wantabe "Buffalo Bills" on here need to read the stats that show this is a highly unusual case, and that many more are killed by sucides, kids shooting kids, drunks or druggies shooting others, domestic disputes and so on. While I am glad she had a means of defense, she is lucky she was not pistol whipped, the gun stuck up her backside and her head blown off, along with the kids. Don't know anything about the location and circumstances but, if you got to the attic what about the back door? Just a question. Before all the outraged cries from the gun nuts, I own three. The 12 ga pump with double OO is the "last line of defense". The chances one would ever need more than 10 rounds in any situation like this is greater than being hit by lightening or an astroid. Give up this nonsense. Col Colt won the west with a six shooter. We need more???????????? Only in your computer game fantacies!

6 rounds into bad guy ( 5 hits, way to go! ), bad guy still able to get up and get away. Glad that there was not a second ( or more bad guy ) as her pistol was empty. A second guy would have taken another six, wait a sec, with a 10 round mag she'd only have four left. Uh oh!

I think your stats are skewed. I have personaly used a pistol three times to protect myself or someone else. In all three cases I did not have to drop the hammer because the perpetrators either backed off or were held at gun point until captured by police. None of those incidents made the news. What did make the news was a heavily edited news story about the need for more gun controle where my young daughter and I were interviewed at a gun range. I was teaching my daughter which end of a pistol killed, which crippled, and how to avoid being on receiving end of the killing end. In other words, how to handle a gun in a safe and responsible manner. Instead of being portrayed as a responsible parent, I was portrayed by channel 7 news as a potential crazed killer, busily training another potential crazed killer. I guess I just didn't fit their agenda of abrogating the 2nd amendment, so they edited the interview to make me fit the profile they felt did support their agenda.

My condolances to the children. However, wake up conservative, non shooting Americans. There are Politicians that want to take guns away from all Americans. Shame on them. What would have happened to this brave Mother, and her innocent children if the Mom did not have a self defence weapon. Rape, multiple stab wounds, innocent family members murdered, or worse.
In societies where guns are banned and confiscated, crime rate goes up. Criminals know they are safe. Is this what you want for your children and your families. Gun nuts avoid areas where they know their targets own and know how to use guns. Please research these facts.
I do not own any AR-15 or other semi-automatic guns, but I thank GOD for my neighbors and friends that do.
Enough said. Purchase a self defense weapon, and learn how to use it. You will help the USA economy, and be safer at the same time. TGR in Alpharetta, GA 30004.

Good exmple of the seSecond Admendment at work! And. as a LEO Firearrms Instructor from 1991-2008, when I retired, other than a .50 caliber BMG round, there are going to be those tiimes when bullets should seem to kill but don't. That is the Murphys Law of Use of Force. She stopped him from hurting her and her children, that is primarily what a handgun is good for. There is one documented case where it took over a dozen pistol caliber rounds and two slugs from a twelve gauge ( and some buckshot if I remember ) before a man went down and died. So rather than get wrapped around the axle about .38 vs 357, vs .40. vs. 45 etc, etc, let us all agree; her pistol did what is was suppoded to do; saved her, her kids, gave her an equalizer. Depending on the laws in her state, she could be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The man was unarmed, and a homeowner cannot use deadly force unless their life is in immediate danger.
People have been charged with homicide and manslaughter in some states for killing an unarmed burglar. The class example is shooting or killing the burglar as he is climbing out the window to escape. Since the home owner was not in immediate danger while he was trying to flee, there was no justification to use deadly force.

Mr. Albright Jr
The perp was NOT trying to flee (going up into the attic where the mother and children were hiding). As for you saying she was not in immediate danger, this POS broke into HER home with a crowbar and when he heard her speaking (she was on the phone), went LOOKING for her. What is your definition of "immediate danger"? Logically, any intruder, uninvited, whom breaks into a home HAS placed the residents in immediate danger! A few days before this happened, I had a similar situation arise at my home at a quarter after midnight. I'm only about 10 miles from where this incident occurred. Only before the POS could break into my home, I turned my dogs on 'em as a warning. I remained inside my home locked and loaded! Castle Doctrine gives me this right. The dogs did their job, but I assure you, if they hadn't scared this waste of human flesh away, and he gained entry, my Glock would have served its' intended purpose. I will not lose my life, nor be harmed from some scumbag.

As sad as it was at Sandy Hook CT, here is an example of why people should still have a weapon in their home and know how to protect themselves & family. This story didn't say if the intruder was armed or not. At a time when someone is breaking into your home you can't assume that person is not armed with some kind of weapon. I'm hoping she has a lic. for her weapon.

As a a retired Fed, I can recall our training: one to the body, two to the head. That usually ends all speculation.
Kenneth M. Collins
2:13 pm on Sunday, January 6, 2013
Unfortunately for you, you just showed that you are NOT and NEVER have been a FED. A FAILURE TO STOP DRILL is two to Center Mass, followed by one to the Head. That is what LEO, PPS (Bodyguard), and Other Professional training doctrine dictates. Two shots center mass because it is the largest target area and therefore the greatest chance of stopping the assault. One shot to the head because the assault hasn't stopped, however the head being a much smaller target , is much harder to hit under a stress situation. A lot of departments still don't teach FTS because 1) it involves a LOT more training and with limited budgets, they can't afford it, & 2) it generally makes for bad press, and poor public opinion from the sheeple. That is why the North Hollywood Shootout took 44 minutes. Of over 50 LAPD officers shooting at the 2 bank roobers, NOT A SINGLE OFFICER took a head shot because they were NEVER TRAINED TO. This kind of training generally only goes to SWAT and other special units because of the intesive training required. If you actually were a trained professional, because of the intensive training you would have received, you would NEVER have forgotten or gotten it wrong. And, YES, I AM a professional, and this woman performed ADMIRABLY under the circumstances.

GAJ - If I'm correct (and I hope I am), I think as long as they are in your home, you're safe. It's when they are running across your yard after the fact that you can end up with dangling pieces. If he had the tire iron still in his hand, it is considered a deadly weapon, so she certainly could have felt that her life was in danger. I think she's ok as far as Georgia goes.

There's a lot of dufus comments here about the mother's shooting skill and the burglar's mental acuity (and from people who failed to read all of the article)but 'Judith Kenny' hit the nail on the head. The mother did everything right; she collected her kids and hid in the attic but this guy, even though he had free access to everything in the house, hunted her down in the attic, so he wasn't just interested in burglary. He was a local and may well have known she would be alone with her kids. However, when a normal citizen is forced to shoot a criminal, they almost always have issues to work through later. Shooting to kill someone is not a decision taken lightly and is a heavy burden for most people to carry. Here is a responsible gun-owner defending herself and her children. Over a million times a year, someone uses a gun to stop a crime (usually no shots are fired) but the anti-gunners would make victims of those people. Thankfully, this mother was armed and knew what to do. She gave the buglar every chance to just do his thing and leave but he didn't want to do that.

Tammy Osier

PG - see that's what's wrong with society today. We've let a certain faction of people take over and try to change our laws to give more rights to the perpetrator of a crime than to the victim. That's what's we're fighting here. The right to defend your home is a basic right that should not be touched. There was a time that if you broke the law, you paid for the crime. Not anymore. Now people look for reasons that a person committed a crime and he/she gets off. Well, let them find out the why's while serving their time. I know for a fact that there are tons of resources for those that are locked up. If you're dangerous then you don't need to be in the mainstream with everyone else, which in my mind violates the rights of innocent people.

Yes I do. All I can say is Go Girl. You saved your children from harm. I am certain that was your only thought - your children. I think about the gun laws and they only protect a small persentage of Americans. Unfortunately I can not be one of them. I am 56 years old and if that were to happen to me I would have to try and ward off an intruder with a bat . Simply because I did something stupid when I was 17. I/followed a crowd I should not have and obtained a felony. It has been close to 40 years ago and that still prevents me from owning a weapon to protect my family. If I own protection I just go to jail, not the crook. The government wants the guns out of felons hands. All they are doing is to keep them out of the hands of citizens like myself, that have no intention of harm to anyone. If a felon with a goal wants a gun, he will find one. I guarnntee one of his accomplaces will have one readally avaliable. So until our government realizes this I will continue to arm my house with ash instead of lead. Her and the kids had to step over him from the crawl space to get away - with him still trying to get at them. Please pray for the family as they will have a lot of sleepless nights over this, especially if the scumbag lives. I wouldn't doubt that she wishes she would have stopped and reloaded and many suggested - but her goal was to get the kids to a safe area - not think she was in a Die Hard movie

As far as I'm concerned, she did right. Once he stopped being a danger to her she had no cause to continue to shoot. She was able to leave without endangering herself and the kids. And, she ( and her kids ) will not have to remember that a man died in her house, at her hand.
Please pass along to her that many people support her decisions, and our best wishes for her recovery.
Yes, I know that she was not physically hurt, however many people have trouble dealing with having shot someone. Even a piece of scum like this.

Auntie, Your niece is a hero. I thought she only had a 38 spl. when I read 5 rounds. Everyone is an expert after the fact. To me she is a Hero. To maintain her composure and not lose it and hit 5 times with only 5 rounds is outstanding. She saved her childrens lives. He was going to the attic. I don't think he was looking for old xmas ornaments. He was looking to take a life. I think she did maybe not what she wanted to do but what she had to do for her kids. What a great Mom.

God bless and be with this brave woman who faced a horrible nightmare in her own home. She and her husband and children will need lots of support and prayers. Evidently she was well prepared and reacted in the best way she could.
I do think it's creepy to have so many celebratory comments when a young family has just experienced such a violation of their home and family. There seem to be many experts on shoulda/coulda/woulda. Let them have some semblance of peace. Be respectful. The bad guy was stopped. This outcome is probably the exception and not the rule. Maybe some of the information posted will help the next victims survive. Thank God this family survived . . . with the gun and help from angels, I believe.

"This outcome is probably the exception and not the rule. "
It does not have to be the exception. She had a few things going for her;
1. She knew he was coming and had time to prepare.
2. She had a gun.
3. She knows how to use it.
4. She tried to avoid the intruder in a way that prepared her to defend her family if needed.
5. Perhaps the most important of all, she did not panic.
Only the first was a matter of chance, the rest were choices. If given the chance, could you make the right choices?

Bob M, I gave the brave mother and the gun credit. I'm sure you can find statistics that show whatever you want them, too, via different and differing sources. If this outcome were more common than not, people would probably pay a lot less attention than this case is getting. The news report I heard Friday night said that the victim told police she was worried the intruder would get his hands on the other gun she left out in the open. That's an example of a possible different outcome, among many others. I just feel that everyone should wait and see if the family makes a statement. If not, the speculation is just that. None of us was present. No one knows what they would do in similar circumstances . . . some just think they do.

You're right, most of the statistics are slanted by one side or the other.
I give this woman a great deal of credit. She got lucky and knew the creep was coming, but after that she gets the credit for the outcome.
On a related topic, it sure seems like he was looking for something. And, I don't think it was valuables. He could have grabbed a TV or PC and left. He kept looking until he found the family.

Not wrong for you to say it - your opinion, but wrong if medical personnel put aside their Hippocratic Oath to mistreat any patient. I hope they did the best their training allowed. They should treat all their patients to the best of their knowledge and ability. They could make a mistake and not properly treat someone who is innocent. It's not for them to judge. The intruder will answer to God, after he answers to the judge. Must have been God's will that he lived. Maybe He didn't want this young mother to have that on her conscience, though her actions were justified.

Miss Mimosa,
I'll answer that for you. It's WRONG to wish the medical staff took their time when helping an injured human being. You are a sick and twisted individual. For Melinda Herman's 9 year old twins, I hope the robber lives. I don't know what I would do if I witnessed my mother murder someone.

I heard the 911 tape. If you haven't heard it, it will bring a lot of clarity as to why it is important to train and be prepared. She called her husband, who put her on 3 way with 911. He was coaching her through the whole thing. He said, "Do what I taught you..." He told them play by play what was happening. This man could have raped and killed her and those children. This is the very purpose of responsible gun omwnership. To PROTECT the family against those that would o them harm. If you haven't listened to it, I encourage you to do so.

Plus, Amy, watch your phrasing, please. 'Murder' is a legal term, implying forethought and malice. This woman did what she had to do. Her duty, actually, if you want to know the truth. More of these stories need to be coming out, and more of these thug pieces of crap need to be removed from society.
Frankly, calling her a murderer is offensive in the highest sense....
Amy Jellicoe
2:58 pm on Friday, January 11, 2013
I stand corrected Karsten. I'm not beyond reproach. So here's the corrected version. I don't know what I'd do if my Mom was a killer. And just so you know, Mrs. Herman had forethought about killing someone because she bought a gun, and guns are designed to kill people. Secondly, and rightfully so, Mrs. Herman had malice. If someone breaks into my house, yeah, I have malice towards them.
Amy Jellicoe

Karsten Torch
3:06 pm on Friday, January 11, 2013
Yeah, that's OK. Unlike some, I'm OK with being offended. I have no right to not be offended. I'll survive.
And as long as I'm picking nits, your concept of malice of forethought is the same as saying that if somebody buys a fire extinguisher for their house, they're hoping their house catches fire. Which I kind of doubt. A gun is a tool. Recreation, personal protection, whatever. And a gun had more uses than a fire extinguisher. So no, there is no malice. Nobody I know bought a gun so that they could kill somebody. And everybody I know prays nothing like this will ever happen to them, but hopes they have the courage and fortitude to do what this woman did.

Karsten, I am not writing this to you but to Amy. First Karsten, Amy has a screw loose. For her to say that that Mom was a killer is just about the sickest thing I have ever heard. If she purchased the kill because she wanted to kill someone because thats why people buy guns is nuts. If she was waiting to kill someone whey did she go up into the corner of her attic? Why not just sit and wait for him the break in then blow him away? Why was she scared Sh#tless? I have a number of guns. I am retired and I relax by target shooting. It not very easy to hit that little Bullseye with that little bullit and when you do it feels good and gets out alot of energy. I was just thinking. Does this amy drive a car? I wonder, is she driving around looking for a jaywalker to run over? Sounds just as crazy as her idea that people buy guns waiting to shoot someone.
Karsten Torch
11:22 pm on Friday, January 11, 2013
Paul, Amy doesn't have a screw loose. This is what she honestly believes. It's born out of ignorance. And I don't mean that to say stupid. She's not that. She just doesn't understand. For her and others like her, guns exist for one purpose only. To kill. Take my analogy of a fire extinguisher. You buy it to out out fires. Guns shoot things. And in her mind, the only thing somebody would buy one for is to kill somebody. Again, its purely because of a misunderstanding of guns and their purpose.
People like Amy have a deep respect for life. Even for people like this scumbag that broke into the house and hunted down the woman and her family. Amy said earlier that she probably couldn't have pulled the trigger. But I'm willing to bet if it was her husband or children or mother that was being threatened, she would. But maybe not to defend herself. Again, some people hold all life sacred, and would rather be the ones killed than do the killing.

8:40 am on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Yup, you're right. I do have respect for the human life. And stop it with those ridiculous analogies. Food is a killer. Water is a killer. Fire is a killer. A gun is not a killer in your eyes; people are. I get it.
Paul Martinelli

Karsten , First off, Thank You. You are right and I realize that and respect you for your out look. I just get so angry when people look at things through eyes like her. How anyone would think that someone would want to kill someone is crazy. I wish there was a way of finding out how that Mom is. I'm sure she is glad she was able to protect her kids but she must be torn up inside. I don't know her so in a way I am glad she didn't kill him. I don't know if she would be able to live with that. Thank You again for your point of view, it really made me think.
Karsten Torch
12:04 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Food is a killer? Water is a killer? I'm not even sure what you're talking about here. And my analogies aren't ridiculous. Or tell me why you think they are. Again, I don't buy a fire extinguisher because I want to start a fire. I don't even particularly want to have to put out a fire. Just like me buying a gun does not mean I want to shoot somebody.
And again, I know that you only see guns from your narrow point of view. I get it. You see no other purpose. Especially since in this day and age we don't have to hunt for food any more. But some of us enjoy them. We enjoy shooting them, and we enjoy the level of security they give us.
Amy Jellicoe
3:03 pm on Saturday, January 12, 2013
Right, you don't buy a fire extinguisher because you want to start a fire, you buy gasoline. It's obvious that a higher level of thinking is unattainable for you. Who cares if you have a gun, like a gun, or sleep with your gun. Keith Ratliff lived for his guns. Luckily for him, he died by the gun. I hope they never find his killer.
Tammy Osier

The bible (for those who say they read it) gives a clear distinction between murder and killing. If you read translated versions, many times you'll see the word "kill". For instance, "God said, concerning animals, kill and eat". He didn't say "murder and eat". There is a word for "kill". Apostle Paul murdered christians wherever he could find them. In modern translations, it says "kill", but the word for murder is used in reference to those whose intent was evil. Jesus told the disciples to take their cloak AND their sword. Why? In the event someone might try to take their life unlawfully (murder them). To call someone a murderer (or killer) because they defend themselves is the ultimate in misinterpretation! I have mercy on the perp, and hope he finds redemption in his life. But, I want him locked up as long as he has the intent to harm innocent people. We're to be careful what we call people as those who have account before God. This woman will probably jump out of her skin every time she hears a fire cracker for the rest of her life. A car backfires, she fears. To call her anything but a victim, is, well, someone used the word ignorant. TO be ignorant is one thing; I'm ignorant about lot's of things, but we need to learn to keep our thinking from becoming so narrow that we defend wrong.
Deep respect for all life requires wisdom in knowing the difference between terms lest you agree with evil and allow it to flourish. Be gentle as lambs, yet shrewd as a serpent.

Keith Ratliff lived for his guns. Luckily for him, he died by the gun. I hope they never find his killer.
There is not excuse or reply for this. Then you get personal basically telling people that THEY need a higher level of thinking? really? You ridicule them as being ridiculous? Amy, your logic is astounding. You are quite possibly the most screwed up person I've ever come across. You value life, unless that person happens to disagree with you. He owned guns, and didn't break any laws by doing so. But because he did something you don't happen to like, then good riddance. And hopefully the person that killed him gets away with it. Wow.
