Although the plan is to hold off on a grand opening until after the holidays, Loganville’s first skating rink looks set to open before the end of the weekend.
“If everything goes according to plan, we hope to open at 1 p.m. on Sunday,” said Tamie Malanga, co-owner of 78 Skate on Highway 78 in Loganville.
The flooring on the 10,000 square-foot warehouse area, most of which will be used for skating, was scheduled to go in Thursday evening, leaving just a couple of days for the finishing touches.
The new roller rink is part of an expansion of the Putt N Play in the old Albright’s Flooring building next door to Sonic in Loganville. The flooring company has moved to the old Putt N Play location. The extra warehouse space is being converted to the roller rink. 78 Skate also has party rooms for kids’ parties and a dining area where they plan to sell pizza, popcorn, hotdogs and sodas. There is also a game room in the front of the building.
Although it has taken a lot of work, 78 Skate plans to be operational in the days leading up to Christmas. The colorful new skates are all lined up for rental and the necessary employees have been hired. Malanga said they had almost 200 applications from people wishing to be employed at the roller rink.
They have a DJ on hand and the disco ball that will rotate during skating sessions comes with its own personal history. Malanga said it was the one used in the filming of "Footloose" as well and "Vampire Diaries."
Parking has been a concern for some people. There is not much parking in the front of the building and the parking spaces at the back are not really visible from the road. Malanga said much of the back parking lot has already been marked off and the landowner is in the process of adding more spaces where a detention pond is currently located.
Malanga and her husband have been excited about bringing a roller rink to Loganville and the community has shared in their excitement. It looks like the wait is finally over and children of all ages will soon have the opportunity to put their skating skills to the test.
