How's Your School Doing?

Pro Publica analyzes federal data to offer a snapshot of public education opportunities. Elementary, middle and high school data can be accessed from the Pro Publica website.

How good a job does the state of Georgia do in giving students equal access to public education? Access to advanced placement courses, advanced math courses and gifted programs?

The team at Pro Publica, decided to find out, using information collected by the U.S. Department of Education Office of Civil Rights. Pro Publica is a non-profit, independent news organization that does “investigative journalism in the public interest,” according to their website.

Released last week, this particular project finds that in many states, there’s a negative correlation between high-poverty public schools and the percentage of students enrolled in more rigorous courses. Many in education call the disparity between richer and poorer districts and access to higher level courses the "opportunity gap," according to Pro Publica.

However, Gwinnett County Public Schools won the $1 million Broad Prize in 2010 for narrowing achievement gaps between income and ethnic groups and results of the Pro Publica study demonstrate just why GCPS was the recipient of the prize.

Loganville High School – number of students 1,615. 

Students who receive free or reduced lunch  -  17 percent

Students taking at least one AP course  -  9  percent

Students taking advanced math  -  10 percent

Ethnic make-up  -  79 percent white

 

Grayson High School – number of students 2,810

Students who receive free lunch  -  27 percent

Students taking at least one AP course  -  22 percent

Students taking advanced math  -  24 percent

Ethnic make-up  -  51 percent white
