Happy Birthday to the World's Oldest Living Person
Walton County resident Besse Cooper turned 115 today. She became the oldest known living person June 21 on the death of Maria Gomes Valentin, who was 48 days older.
Walton County, and the world, has a very notable birthday to celebrate – that of the world’s oldest living resident.
Besse Cooper, born 115 years ago today, will have a low-key birthday party at the Monroe nursing home she has lived in for the last year or so, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
As well as family members, in attendance reportedly will be a researcher from the Guinness Book of World Records, who will give her a plaque again assigning her that distinction. Cooper was first certified the world’s oldest person in January, but had to relinquish the title for a few months when it was discovered that Brazilian-born Maria Gomes Valentin was 48 days older. However, when Valentin died June 21, Cooper again became the world’s oldest person.
Cooper has been reported to attribute her longevity to “minding her own business and not eating junk food,” although she also reportedly quipped to her grandson that she thought she should be given a box of chocolates when she first learned she had become the world’s oldest living person.
The Walton Tribune has photos of Cooper preparing for today's big birthday celebration.
