Do You Believe in the Healing Power of Prayer?

Scientific research varies from "Yes," "No," to "Maybe" and "Inconclusive," but tell any of that to the parents of Aaron Garcia of Loganville, Ga. or Aimee Copeland of Snellville, Ga.

Ever since biblical times, people have believed in the healing power of prayer. However, in more recent times skeptics have set out to disprove the theory. A 10-year study reported in the New York Times in 2006 went even further. It claimed that cardiac patients who knew they were being prayed for had even more serious complications than those who didn’t know or were not receiving targeted prayers.

But tell that to the family and friends of Aaron Garcia of Loganville, Ga. or Andy Copeland, father of Aimee Copeland of Snellville, Ga. In both cases, Internet technology enabled the families to solicit prayers from all over the globe. And in both cases, the patients have shown recoveries described as “miraculous.”

In the case of Aaron Garcia, the Walnut Grove High School student injured in a spring break car accident, his progress went from critical on April 8, 2012, to the following report on his Facebook update page just one month later.

"5/8/12 12:50 pm - Great news from Aaron's mother, "Aaron is doing good!! He's going to be released from the hospital the 15, next Tuesday. Praise to God!!!!".

The high school senior, who almost died on April 8, will likely be able to walk in his graduation next weekend.

Aimee Copeland’s condition is still critical. The 24-year-old West Georgia student developed a rare, flesh-eating bacteria following a zipline accident on May 1. By May 9, she had lost her leg and was looking at losing her other foot and hands as her organs were shutting down. Her father wrote that the doctors had put his daughter’s survival chances at “slim to none.” However, he asked that everyone continue to pray for her. Here is his report May 12 on the South Gwinnett Rotary Facebook page.

"The miracle continues.
The words I hear from the medical professionals to describe Aimee's continued recovery are "astonishing", "incredible", "confounding", "mind boggling" and "unbelievable." All those are fitting words. My favorite word is "miracle." I thank you all for honoring my daughter with your prayers and blood. In like fashion, I pray that my words and actions will honor my Father in Heaven."

So what do you believe? Coincidence - or divine intervention through the healing power of prayer?

In 2005 after several trips to the ER with severe abdominal pain I was referred to my urologist who found an obstruction in one of my ureters. He described this as a "growth" and after several exploratories he felt it was most likely cancerous and would necessitate the removal of my left kidney. Part of the prep for that surgery was to biopsy the "growth" to verify the cancer, so a week before I was scheduled to lose the kidney I went in for the biopsy procedure. Before I went in to surgery a very sweet nun came by and asked if I would like for her to pray with me.

I explained to her that while I wasn't Catholic I would very much appreciate her prayers so she took my hand and prayed with me for several minutes. As we were finishing the orderliy came so I thanked her and she wished me well. When I came out of the anesthetic the first thing I saw was my urologist's face spread in a wide grin. "I have some good news" he said, "it's gone". At first I thought he was talking about my kidney; maybe things were worse than they expected and he'd had to go ahead and take it. Then I heard him say, "...the growth is gone, your ureter is completely clear". Other than "I do", "it's a boy", and "it's a girl", those were the sweetest words I've ever heard. Was it a miracle? I've always felt it a bit presumptuous to think God would waste a miracle on such a poor sinner but my faith tells me that God's hand was at work that day.

Thank you for sharing that Brian. Coincidence? Maybe, but nobody knows for sure - at least not in a realm where we are able to share. Like you, I like to think somebody had your back that day - and who is to know why.

Years ago my 8 yr old son Steven woke up and couldn't put weight on one one of his legs. His pediatrician sent us to a pediatric orthaepedist who examined Steven. He said that he most likely had Legg Perthes which is a condition that causes young boys hip bones to fracture. The treatment is crutches or a wheelchair for about 2 years while the bone knits back together. He put Steven on crutches and scheduled an MRI. I was heartbroken and prayed that God would give him strength to endure what he had to and that God would make His presense known in Steven's life during these years when he was so much more limited than his peers.
We went in for the MRI and the technician said she didn't see anything wrong. We went back to the Dr and the exam was normal. I asked if maybe Steven could have been faking to get out of school or something because I was so shocked. The Dr said No. Previously Steven had severely restricted range of motion in his hips and now he didn't. That was definitely a healing. God in His mercy gave me so much more of a healing than I dared to ask for. Believe, trust and ask God to help your unbelief.
He doesn't always give the healing we ask for but He always hears and loves us and heals in some way - even if it is by restoring us completely in heaven.

If a tree falls in the woods and nobody prayed for it, did it . . .
C'mon man! I prayed for the sun to rise. Praise god. I prayed that I wouldn't be eaten by a shark. Praise god. When will you realize that voices in your head are of no consequence?

They didn't listen when Copernicus and Galileo said the Earth went around the Sun, and Science finally proved it to them hundreds of years later. No matter how far Science advances, their ignorance will always stay two steps ahead.

I certainly understand how easy it is to be a cynic, I was born one. But I think one can love both God and science. The more we learn about the vastness of the universe and just how complex life and the physical world truly is, the more I realize the total improbability of it all. To believe that consciousness came to be through a series of random accidents seems more a leap of faith to me than to believe that there is very elegant design at work in the cosmos. The fact that the tree exists at all is quite remarkable.

You need to be evaluated if you're hearing voices in your head.

Cynical about religion? Science has become a religion to some, and science has come a long way. BUT - they now have two theories with great excitement over each. The theory of relativity (Einstein) and now the new and improved quantum physics. The only problem is: the two theories do not mesh. Do we really think we have "finally" figured it all out? That's where my doubt lies.
