Did a Mother Go Too Far When She Pranked Her Son?
A Utah mother made her son cry when she told him he’d inadvertently purchased a $50,000 car on the Internet. She has now been widely criticized for going too far.
A YouTube video of a mother telling her young son that he had hit the wrong button and purchased a $50,000 car recently caused an uproar with people criticizing her for going too far. The video, which quickly began racking up hits, shows her son crying when his mother told him he had purchased the car.
According to media reports, the 8-year-old had been browsing the site for a car for his father to restore when he came across a Mustang he thought was only $500. When he found it was more, he quickly shut off the iPad. His mother picked it up and, realizing what had happened, she asked him why he had purchased the $50,000 car. The YouTube video shows what followed. Once she told him the truth, however, he too laughed about it. However, not everybody thought it was funny, with many criticizing the mother for the prank.

moron is too nice of a word....I have another...WHAT KIND OF MOTHER ENJOYS SEEING HER CHILD IN PAIN....When he said "Im horrible" it ripped my heart out. That mother is disgusting and needs help..,what in God's name is wrong with people????

The creepy thing about this whole incident is that it was all a set up....she lied to him while he was being filmed. She did this to get some kind of notice on the Internet. She was using her child, and that's what disturbs me. As I said, what a moron. And a meanie. What's she going to film the kid reacting to next time? "Son, your daddy is dead." That should be a great film, said no one with sense. Ever.

It's wrong. It's more than a cruel joke - it is emotional abuse by a parent. It's also exploitative. People should not post videos of their children on youtube. It is an invasion of their privacy and it exploits them. I won't watch that video b/c I don't want to participate in that. I enjoy photos of family and friends on FB as much as anyone, but I don't think it's right to post anyone's picture without their consent. As a new grandmother I used to post a few pics of the little angels on FB, but then I came to realize that I don't have that right. I'm not their parent, and the kids are not capable of consent. If they want to post their own pics and videos on social media, they can do it when they're of age.

That lesson should have been a private one. It was a cruel setup which the mother exploited by posting on youtube. There will always be abuse of social media, but the possibility exists that it can be reduced when children are the subjects.
