At 2 p.m. on Friday, the Bridge on New Hope Church Road in Between will be officially dedicated and named for Besse Cooper. At 116 on Aug. 26, Cooper is the oldest person in the world. The Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony will take place on the bridge. Although Cooper is unlikely to be able to attend the ceremony herself, members of her family will be in attendance to accept the honor on her behalf.
Cooper moved to Between in 1917, at the age of 19, to teach. She never left and now lives in a nursing home in Monroe.
