The gym at Central Gwinnett High School was packed Tuesday night. Not just because the Black Knights were playing cross-town rival Archer Tigers, but to remember Jerry Coleman. 

Just one year ago, Coleman was on that same basketball court dunking over opponents. Now the Central Gwinnett community honored him before the start of the boys basketball game.

Coleman passed away in December at age 19. The Kennesaw State student had undergone surgery to remove his wisdom teeth just days before he died.

Central Gwinnett boys basketball coach David Allen told the crowd about what a wonderful player Coleman was. Principal Nancy Martin remarked how he was a remarkable student. Band Director Chad Deal shared Coleman's passion for drumming and the drum line.

Students from Archer presented Coleman's parents with a basketball, a Bible and a picture-- the three items Coleman said he'd want if he were stranded on an island. Archer is still dealing with their own tragedy after 17 year old student Quavante Combs drowned at Lake Lanier last May.

Finally, the family of Coleman walked out onto the court. The school presented his family with a framed jersey. Coach David Allen announced the school will also permanently hang the number 40 jersey in the gym.
