Candlelight Vigil at GHS for 2 Teens Killed
A candlelight vigil is planned at Grayson High School at 7 p.m. Tuesday for the two teens killed in an accident Saturday. "God's got Grayson today," co-organizer of the vigil said on the Facebook event page as the community struggles with the loss.
Friends of two Grayson teens killed in a car accident in Lawrenceville Saturday night have planned a candlelight vigil in their memory at Grayson High School on Tuesday.
GHS Haley Nicole Myers and Parker Thompson has set up a Facebook Public Event page and have assured that they have the support of GHS principal David Hopson.
“We've talked to Principle Hopson and he's supporting this 100 percent - he just asks that we make it 7:00 rather than 6:30. And if it rains, he's opening up the school,” Thompson said on the Facebook event page. “God's got Grayson today, and I know this is hard for so many, but thanks a lot for the turn out and support of this event.”
Friends and family attending are asked to bring photos of Hope McKenzie, the 17-year-old GHS junior who died in the crash, and Austin Rogers, 19, who also died. He was a 2009 graduate of the school. McKennan Lockridge, a 9th grader at GHS, also was injured in the accident.
Jorge Quintana, spokesman for Gwinnett County Public Schools, said the teachers of McKenzie and Lockridge at GHS were informed of the accident over the weekend and the other teachers were informed Monday morning.
“Throughout the day today, the school principal is visiting each class in which these students were enrolled to speak with classmates and friends,” Quintana said, adding he was accompanied by a counselor in case any students might require additional support. “The school district also made available its crisis response team, a team made up of counselors from across the district. These counselors also are at the school to speak with any student or staff member who might need assistance in coping with this loss.”
Grayson Mayor Jim Hinkle extended his condolences and posted a statement on Loganville-Grayson Patch.
“The entire City of Grayson offers condolences to the families having lost loved ones in this terrible accident,” Hinkle wrote.
The accident occurred at about 10:10 p.m. Saturday on Webb Ginn House Road between Chadwick Park Drive and Arbor Hill Court. Police say that the vehicle driven by McKenzie crossed the center lane just west of Chadwick Park Drive, sideswiping another car before colliding head-on with another vehicle. McKenzie and Rogers were killed and Lockridge was injured. The drivers of the other vehicles and their passengers only sustained minor injuries, but the drivers face charges unrelated to the cause of the accident. Sharianne Smith, 22, was arrested on an outstanding warrant and Jeffery M. Watson, 51, of Loganville, was charged with driving under the influence. However, he was not charged with vehicular homicide as the DUI was not considered the cause of the accident.
