Bond Denied for Man Who Was Shot by Loganville Woman

Paul Slater, who was shot by a Loganville mother last month during a break-in, has now been released from the hospital and is being held, without bond, at Walton County Detention Center.

Walton County Sheriff's Office confirmed that Paul Slater, who was shot by a Loganville mother on Jan. 4 when he broke into her home, has now been released from Gwinnett Medical Center and is being held, without bond, in the Walton County Detention Center in Monroe, Ga. He is charged with possession of tools for commission of a crime, aggravated assault and burglary in first degree. WCSO's Capt. Greg Hall said that he was being held without bond also for violating probation.

"If he has a lawyer he will be able to petition the Superior Court or for another appearance in front of a magistrate judge," Hall said. "He should have a preliminary hearing - possibly in a couple of weeks."

Hall said Slater was picked up from the hospital Sunday by deputies from WCSO. He had his first appearance in front of the Magistrate Judge Monday morning.

Slater had been recovering from gunshot wounds after being hit five times by Melinda Herman when he confronted her hiding in a closet with her 9-year-old twins. According to the police report, Slater had knocked on the door and then rang the doorbell. She reportedly contacted her husband, who told her not to answer the door as he wasn’t expecting anyone. When she saw Slater retrieve a crowbar from the car, she grabbed her children, her .38 revolver, and hid in an attic closet. Slater broke into the house and subsequently located her in the closet. At that time she opened fire on him, hitting him with five of the six rounds in the gun. Her husband had already called 911 and by the time police arrived, the mother had retreated to a neighbor with the children, Slater had tried to escape in his car, but had subsequently crashed in a wooded area in the neighborhood.

Shame he didn't die. Now we get to pay for his room and board for the next 10-15 years.

If the Feds had their way, the mother would have had to use rocks to fend him off. Good for a brave mother!

I was curious if anyone knows if there has been a defense fund set up for the mother. Some attorney will surely convince this guy to sue the defending mother. Unfortunately, the family will likely need financial support to defend the mother one more time against the predator.

Tammy, Georgia has a "Stand Your Ground" law that allows a potential victim, who feels he/she life may be in danger, to use lethal force to defend themselves. The law also protects them from possible civil lawsuits from the criminal or criminal's family who may seek restitution.

Good! The fact that he advanced on her kind of seals it anyway. Still, should be interesting.

I hope he gets locked up for a long time.
This way the family doesn't have to worry about this low life. I applaude the mother for what she did and pray for her to get through all this.
