Before their opening game against Winder Barrow’s JV on Thursday, Coach Schneiders told her girls that they are Archer 2015 … and this was their chance to introduce themselves as a team.
“Eleven are freshmen; many have played together or known each other for years,” she said.
The first game didn’t leave them with a good self impression of their abilities. Five errors and a team batting average of .192 strengthened their resolve to come back on Friday ready to play. Eliminating the errors, the ninth-grade Tigers beat Athen Christian’s JV and the Appalachee JV.
“On Saturday, they brought their bats,” said Schneiders. They finished with a team batting average for the tournament of .654. “I couldn’t be more proud of these young ladies."
The tournament was not only a team introduction to the high school competition arena, it was also Schneiders head coaching debut; last year, she was assistant JV Coach at Archer.
This is Archer's first ninth-grade softball team, and only the third year for the program which is headed by Kristpher Daniels.
“All of the ladies played so well; many in new positions,” Schneiders said. Specifically, she pointed out that Laura Allen, usually a first baseman, “caught 2 great games, played one in the outfield and another at third base.”
Brittney Taylor, also a first baseman, had some playing time at third base and on second.
“All of the girls came through at the plate,” Schneiders said. Dacey Jones and Emily Vigue both finished with two triples; Vigue leads the team in RBI's having 10 and Jones leads the team with a .615 batting average. Capitalizing on bunts, Bailey Hanson and Korey Best were able to move around the bases and together account for more than one-third of all the runs scored during the five-game tournament.
The ninth-grade Archer Tigers are the Barrow County JV Lead-Off Classic 2011 Champions. Coach Daniels and the Varsity team also went 4-1 in their tournament this weekend to bring home a 2nd Place recognition.
